I thought I would share a few BASS fishing tips with you all.
- Use the lightest tackle the conditions and location will allow.
- Use simple rigs.
- Fish in the areas that may hold Bass. Look for gullies, tidal currents, backwash, changes in the sea bed.
- Fish the water. Don’t just cast to the same spot, work the water, cast at a distance and work back, really hunt them out.

Dicentrarchus labrax - The Bass is a silver fish with 8/9 spines on the dorsal fin.
British Bass records are about 20lb in weight.
The size limit is 36cms in length. ( I think ! )
The Bass breeds of shore in spring. Young bass return to river estuaries, harbors etc to mature. Many nursery areas now prohibit fishing for Bass unless fishing from the shore.

A good all round fishing bait for Cod, Flounder, Whiting, Dogfish, and Bass and under used in my opinion.
To collect razor fish prepare a saturated solution of salt and water. Keep adding salt to the water until no more will dissolve. Store this in a sports drink container with a squirty type lid.
Head to a sandy beach and look for a dimple in the sand and squirt the solution into the razor fish hole, carry on doing this in all the holes in close proximity, within about a square yard should do.
The saturated solution will cause the razor fish to lift from its hole in the sand, at this point hold the shell and gently pull the shell from the sand like a tug of war. Do not yank it as the meat will stay in the hole and you will have an empty razor fish shell in your hand.

I remember this day’s Bass fishing like it was yesterday, even though it was about 15 years ago.
My brother and I went to Seaton in East Devon for a spot of mullet fishing. On arriving at the mark the wind was making the Mullet fishing to hard so we decided to go Bass fishing from the shore instead.
We walked to the beach where there was an onshore 12-15knt wind blowing with a small swell running in. It was overcast as well and I remember the tide was high but it was only a moderate tide, not perfect for Bass fishing.
We used 11ft Spinning rods, 10lb maxima line and I was using an old Abu Cardinal fishing reel, my lure was an Abu Killer in blue and silver. This Bass plug is a rigid plug, diving to only 2-3 feet on a moderate retrieval.
I was fishing for about 25 – 30 mins. I would cast then retrieve the lure then take about 3 paces along the shore. My brother was ahead of me by about 20 yards and he was fishing hard like he always does when he is Bass fishing.

PVA bags are used mainly by carp fishermen, However I have used them for beach casting.
The PVA bag dissolves on contact with water and releases whatever it contains. I make a bread, old bait and pilchard oil mash. I make it very dry so it won’t effect the bag. Course anglers use them for boillies and bread to ground bait.
If I am beach casting I then lower the weight into the PVA bag and seal it, then cast it out.
The idea is this produces a strong scent trail and attracts fish to your bait.
There are three methods I know of to catch bait prawns.
Prawn funnel trap
- Create a funnel trap for prawns by getting a large soft drinks/water bottle, cutting the top off about where the label stops. Then shoving the top back into the bottle with the neck inside the creating a funnel. You then need to stitch this in place so it can be removed and replaced when emptying the prawn trap. Fill it with some sand for weight and attach a line to the prawn trap (melting a hole with a hot spike is best). Bait the prawn trap and lower it along side a harbour wall or similar for a day.
Many people consider that fish are just a source of food; yet there is another angle that is little known. The manufacturing industry deals with more than two 2 billon pound of fish and fishing tackle per anual. Which is slightly more than is used for food.
What most people do not know is that fishing has become one of the most popular sports in Europe, and anglers are growing everyday
