The kite is attached to your main reel line, at a length of about 50 to 100 meters you put a 3 way swivel, one loop goes to the kite, one loop back to the reel and the third loop has a 5 – 15 meter line going to a ballast weight, normally a plastic bottle filled with water (this keeps the rig in the water). At the ballast weight there is another swivel which connects the trace.

To increase your chances of catching from the sea you need to be there when the fish are hunting.

Generally larger tides induce more fish in to feeding, because stronger currents scourer food from the sea bed and higher tides flood beaches and rock dragging food sources into the sea. Also higher tides are often when other sea creatures mate and give birth hence a lot of planktonic food stuffs in the water column. For example mysis shrimp are found in my experience in greater numbers when there is a full moon, hence spring tide

Which do you prefer Rag worm or Lug worm ?

I have a few friends here in Cornwall who swear by lug worm. They will only fish with that bait and they get some great results, especially for Bass off surf beaches. They also spend almost as much time digging bait as fishing.

I tend to follow the more common law of Lug worm in the winter and rag worm in the summer. I guess this maybe because Cod tend to prefer Lug and of course Cod are generally for us southerners a winter species, so that may be the reason behind my preference.

Seaton is located on the eastern edge of Devon, on it south coast. Home to the mouth of the river Axe, there is good fishing for a range of species.

Mullet can be caught in the river. Generally people fish the seaward side of the last road bridge. The access is good and the fishing is easy from the quay side. Ground bait heavily and get fishing. Landing your catch can be a challenge and you need to keep an eye out for moving boats. This mark fishes well on the rising tide.

Flounder are caught the other side of the road bridge. Crab and rag are the preferred baits. Fish the tide up. This is not a renowned Flounder mark, but it does produce fish. School Bass are caught here as well, but please release any under size fish!!

This is at the Portland end of Chesil beach. There are rocks off shore here unlike the rest of the beach hence why Conger come in here more than anywhere else along Chesil.

Fishing during the hours of darkness can produce the best results here and the species that are taken regularly from this part of the beach are – Bass, Pouting, Conger,  Pollock with the odd Bream.

There is a car park close by so having to walk to your mark is not a problem.

As with most fishing marks on Chesil beach it can get very busy in the summer time.

The Dragons teeth is a mark for the fitter angler. Its about 20mins walk on fine shingle left (towards the east) along Chesil beach from Abbotsybury.

The teeth are WWII tank traps and I understand you cannot fish the other side as it’s a protected area.

This area of the beach has fished very well in the past for me and my brother who caught a Dragonet here. Catches include Dogfish, Mackerel, Scad, Gurnard and in the winter Cod to a good size and Whiting.

To get to the mark head towards Bridport on the B3157, in Abbotsbury head towards the Swannery then follow signs for the tropical gardens and beach. Proceed past the gardens and there is a beach car park.

West Bexington was the first mark on Chesil I remember fishing.

In the summer there can be hundreds of people fishing this mark and you may have to walk along way to find a spot.

Mackerel, Dogfish, Dabs, Pout can be caught with the odd Ray and the occasional Red Mullet in warmer summers. Winter species include Cod and Whiting.

Cogden is towards the western end of Chesil beach, not far from West Bay.

Again a popular destination for shore anglers, but it seems that it has not fished as well as it might over the past few years.

There tends to be a lot of spider crab activity at this section of Chesil beach, so regular re-baits are called for at this location.

Plaice can be caught at long range. I understand there are mussel beds at about 100 – 120 yards. This is a good cast for most anglers!! The usual shore caught species can be caught from here as well.

This is the latest to come from the ABU collection. This fishing reel really winds in the line at an amazing 6:3 to 1 ratio.

For those of you who don’t understand, for every turn of the handle the spool will turn 6.3 times. The amount of line that winds in depends on how much is on the spool, as the more line the greater the diameter of the spool.

Its said that this is the fastest retrieve rate of any fishing reel on the market.

Zach asked about buying fishing rods and reels. I thought that others may find use of my opinions so I posted the reply here instead of simply replying to Zach.

I am guessing you are not from the UK !

But my advice to you would be, rods in the £50 - £100 price bracket are very, very good value for money. ABU, Shakespeare, and Diawa all produce rods for this niche pricing zone. The rods will not be the best, but for somebody who enjoys fishing here and there this would be an ideal option.
