I was hpoing over the past few days to go Kayak fishing for Mullet if the wind was strong or Bass fishing if the wind and sea was good. Sadly not only did we have strong winds and a short swell running we also had high rivers and the kayak Mullet fishing was a no go from the marks I have been looking at and working on.

This is just typical, when you get the chance to go fishing all the other factors play against you and spoil your chance. Anyway I have had some Fishing-blog.co.uk stickers made up for my Kayak, so its been a chance to get them in place and my brother has used this time to source and develop more Kayak fishing modsfor his YAK. As soon as hes sends me the ideas via email I will be posting them here.

Is it just me or looking through the last few months of the angling press do there seem to be more reports about Bream catches and Bream fishing methods than ever before?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, have there been more Bream caught and if so why? Is it because people are moving towards sports fishing and want to catch fighting fish on balanced tackle.Let us know about your recent Bream success or other success stories.

Kayak fishing, live eelsI am having a dry patch at the moment with very few good catches. I went to the Manacles on my fishing kayak with a live bait holder containing 12 of the strongest sand eels I have seen in a long time. I rigged up my bait caster with a running ledger using a ball bullet of about ¼ to ½ an once and a 10 ft 14lb breaking strength fluro carbon leader and a new sharp hook.

“Would you recommend a touring kayak for fishing as I am unsure what type of Fishing Kayak to buy.”

Well most Touring Kayaks tend to track well and have very good glide, meaning they travel very quickly in a straight line with minimum effort. These two factors are good as it means you can get to fishing marks quickly and with little effort, it also means you can get out of trouble quickly – very important!

Despite the very strong winds and heavy rain I managed to go Kayak fishing today. I chose a sheltered spot out of the weather in a local estuary hoping for a Bream. I took with me 30 lug worm for bait as I have heard they are fishing better than Crab in the local area (I never do well on Crab at the best of times)

Bream fishingI got to the water at about ½ an hour before low tide. There were loads of Mullet waiting for the tide to flood and I knew there would be school Bass amongst them but I hoped there would also be some Bream. You can see from this photo the swirls of fish, what you cannot see are hundreds of bait fish exploding from the water in their panicked state to get away from their predator.

After spending the last few months on fishing mark reconnaissance, looking for indicators for good fishing I revisited a spot that I thought may produce some Ballen Wrasse. Using well matched tackle these feisty fish can provide some good sport.

Wrasse Gear and Bait

A common Wrasse bait is peeler crab, but for some reason I have a reaction to peeler and my hands blow up and become very itchy (not pleasant), so I chose lugworm as my bait of choice. I selected a rocky mark where it shelves quickly into about 15 feet of water (Nr. The Helford) and made a light running ledger using a ball weight and a long (10ft) 18lb fluro carbon leader. The reason for the 18lb leader was to prevent loosing fish due to line abrasion. The hook I used was a size 1 carp hook, as Wrasse don’t have the largest mouths.

Small WrasseGet my drift

There are loads of pages to search through, but by doing a quick search in Devon and Cornwall I found 19 boats, sadly only 3 are SOT kayaks, but when you look further afield there are many more for you to choose from.

Just a quick post to let you know I had a great fishing session today at Porthoustock in  Cornwall. Species included, Pollock, Scad, Red Gurnard and Wrasse.

All were taken on small feathers fished tight to the bottom. The pollock were near the Volnay wreck and the rest were close to the shore towards Porthkerris.

A first was a foul hooked Pipe Fish. I have never caugth one of these before, but I have heard of them being seen in the mouths of cod on the east cost of england. There feed value is very low and both fish and marine birds are becoming victims of the large populations of this fish.

Pictures will follow soon.

Just a quick note to tell you about a session I had last night. I was kayak fishing from Porthoustock the tide had just turned and was falling, the heat was going out of the sun and there was no wind at all.

I was using a Dexter wedge like a pirk, fishing it hard to the bottom and jigging it. I was looking for a Gurnard or anything else that might be there. I know that there are Gurnard there at the moment and in my opinion they are good eating.

I fished for about 3 hours until darkness changing the way I worked the lure by casting the dexter out and retrieving it across the sea bed. I managed one small Pollock but that was all.

There were people plugging and beach casting, the ones I spoke to also had caught very little. That made me feel a whole lot better!!

This question was asked in response to this post DISCO v MALIBU TWO

I recently bought a disco and about to rig it for fishing. Keeping it simple though. No kitchen sinks for me though some electronics might not be so bad. Small gps and depthfinder.

Would you get a disco again? You seem to like the malibu a lot.

Need to get something for my girlfriend.

Talking about kitchen sinks check this fishing blog over the next few days as I have a kayak to show you with whistles and bells!! you could subscribe to the blog so as not to miss out. Look in the top right corner.

Anyway I digress - I love my RTM Disco, it fast and light to paddle but there are stability issues for the purest fisherman. Reaching behind you to get tackle out etc can be hard work and others agree with me on this point. But regarding the Malibu I could take the wife out or both my kids and the wife could follow in the Disco. I could also use the Malibu for fishing sessions where I wanted to take all the gear(there will be an article here soon about my brother who has started rigging his Ocean Duo). The price of the Malibu is also reasonable when you compare it to the fishing models.
