I have been asked by a reader about “A good UK based resources covering the growing interest in saltwater flyfishing”.
Sadly and to be honest there are only two sites that cover this of value in my opinion. One is a dedicated SWFF site the other is a forum and I guess most of you know the sites before I mention them here.
http://www.ukswff.co.uk/ - is a great site that has saltwater fly patterns, Casting techniques, tides and advice to mention but a small amount of this site. The information here is of sound quality and proven; however, I wish it was kept more up to date as this is a great facet of modern sea angling.
http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/ - is a very, very good overall sea fishing forum that covers most aspects of modern sea fishing including salt water fly fishing. Its not a purest saltwater fly fishing site but if you ask the questions some body will answer you and help you in your quest.

Well the weather was looking nice this evening, the tide was dropping which is not the best tide state in my opinion for fishing a new mark but I had 4 hours and I decided to go Saltwater fly fishing from my RTM disco kayak. I am hoping for some sport with mackerel and gar fish if not a few bass and pollock this season, so I have been tweaking my fishing gear for the best performance and I wanted to try out the shooting head I made from an old medium sinking line I had lying around. Just to clarify a shooting head is a length of fly line tuned and cut to length which is design to cast and carry a running line. The theory being you do not need so much line out to cast along way, hence easier to do when kayak fishing (seated). I will talk more about shooting heads another day!! Read the rest of this entry »
I had a bit of a session in a field today to improve my Saltwater Flyfishing technique. I found that after a bit of practice I was able to get 42 paces every cast into a light breeze. I am 6’ tall so I would say that was a good 40yds which I am very happy about, I was using the shooting head I made recently.
This has boosted my confidence and I am really looking forward to getting on the kayak and catching some fish on Fly.
I know that rubber delta eels are not traditional, but they are a lure and modern fly fishing now uses a whole range of materials to entice a fish.
I find these lures very good for Pollock and decided to try them out on the fly rod. The results were good. I went down to Porthleven and dusk on a rising tide and fished the lures with my fly rod along the rocks and Pier. I was only there for about 2 hours and managed 3 Pollock up to ¾ of a pound.
I know that’s its not cutting edge angling, but it was good sport on the fly rod and it proved to me that I could cast this type of lure on the rod. The only little trick to mention is once the lure has been tied on to the line, pull it over the hook eye, this prevents it slipping down the hook due to the power of the cast.
I bought a new Courtland saltwater fly fishing rod rod a few weeks back to match up with my Vision Koma reel. Its a weight 9 rod and it has alot of power for shooting line into head winds as well as working well with saltwater lures (generally a bit heavier than traditional flies). The finish on the rod is superb, a matt green really complements the build quality. The metal fittings are stainless so the saltwater will not corrode the fittings. The action is stiff but it allows me to get really pointed loops when casting, meaning I am stopping the rod hard and getting lots of energy into the cast. I am getting about 40 yds on a regular basis with a good presentation of the fly from the kayak.
The gear in the photo is a floating line with a 9 ft fluro carbon leader tied onto a seatrout shrimp fly. The hook is a double so its a very agressive pattern. I have caught small Bass with this set up, but I hope to connect with a Bream one day soon (fingers crossed).
I have been looking around the web at some interesting fishing blogs and I found this one. Its a very nice site with good quality information and plenty of advice and images.
